Run Report and Pics: Taipei Hash May 14th

Posted on May 16, 2011

On Saturday May 14th, Firewood (aka Mr. Piss) hared for the TH3 in Shenkeng.

Rainy, grey, and miserable, the start was on the side of the main road- things were not looking great.

However, at 3pm the runners set off as usual (although unusually the hares had gone off at 2.30pm giving them a half hour start) not expecting too much.

The first 20 minutes of the run proved to be very enjoyable- some clear forest trails and nice bamboo which was very runnable indeed despite the muddy ground underfoot. This was then followed by a rough and ready middle section comprising of lots of shiggy, nasty, dirty, streams, and dense forest. Whether this run would go down as good or bad was now down to the last 30 minutes.

Happily, Firewood had taken us through the crap for a reason, leading us to a last 30 minutes of fast runnable forest trails and some open agriculture which was very pleasant indeed. By this time a triumvirate of CH3 runners (BVS/Cam, TPR/Jed, and Payne/DWE) had broken away from the pack and were racing it out. The fastest TH3 runners had been left on top of a hill scratching their heads at a check allowing the fast- and smart- CH3 guys to bolt.

A muddy, rocky downhill trail separated the men from the boys with BVS and Dick with Ears risking life and limb to leave the floundering TPR well behind. BVS, with local knowledge started a huge push towards the bottom of this trail to open up a gap of around 200m on DWE.

When they hit the road about 300m later, DWE realized why. A fast downhill road finish could have offered him a chance of victory but by now the gap was too far for his long, gangly, sprinting legs to close. Bugger! TPR came in a couple of minutes after, with the gap to the next runner quite large. Show Shong (or however you spell it) was way back alongside his speedy little friend in around 6th or 7th place.

The Verdict:

A really well put together loop, nice trails, close to town. The hare, according to race winner, BVS, displayed a “great sense of flow” and all seemed to enjoy it.

The Score:

8/10
